It is very interesting to be asked to give some advice to
Baruch college during the time which we are taking classes online due to
Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, up until the pandemic began, majority of
Baruch college professors refused to use the available technology to
incorporate it into their classes. For the most part they would assign Homework
on blackboard and shared class material like class notes and syllabus, but since
the pandemic began, Baruch college students and professors were forced to
convert to online teaching via blackboard and having class sessions on applications
like Zoom. It was during this time that the lack of digital knowledge among
Baruch professors and faculties showed its true face. Years of refusal to learn
and use new technologies like computes and online applications Baby boomer’s generation
professors and faculty forced Baruch college to cancel classes for several
weeks and try to figure out a plan and caused students to suffer and miss out on
classes and materials. As of now we are two semesters into the online teaching,
and it is projected that this distance teaching will continue for another
semester or so and many professor will continue to struggle to work with computers
and teaching online. My advice is that Baruch college take an immediate action
to teach professors how to work with computers and how to run an online class
via zoom and create a new syllabus that reflects the current situation for students
since majority of professors continue to follow their traditional syllabus.
For many years’ students had requested to have online advisement,
helpdesk and consul since Baruch has limited faculties and they simply cannot
support the number of students at Baruch. Since the pandemic and social distancing
Baruch college was forced to convert all services to online with appointments
only, saving students time and travel cost to college as well and wait time. This
is a great example of what could have happened many years ago had Baruch board
and faculties did not resists change!
I believe Covid-19 forced the baby boomer generation
professor and staff at Baruch to accept change and be flexible. We have made a great
progress towards implementing new technologies into our daily college life and my
advice is that Baruch college should work on improving the current online
system and continue using it after the pandemic is over.
I believe that requesting professors to adapt technology and become comfortable with it to teach students is an incredibly impactful idea. Currently, I see many of my classes which are being held over Zoom suffer from this notion. Professors miss raised hands at times, don't know how to mute students who forgot their mics are on, or simply just have trouble understanding how to best utilize the software for their students. Fixing this issue would provide a great benefit to all parties.
