Advice

It is very interesting to be asked to give some advice to Baruch college during the time which we are taking classes online due to Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, up until the pandemic began, majority of Baruch college professors refused to use the available technology to incorporate it into their classes. For the most part they would assign Homework on blackboard and shared class material like class notes and syllabus, but since the pandemic began, Baruch college students and professors were forced to convert to online teaching via blackboard and having class sessions on applications like Zoom. It was during this time that the lack of digital knowledge among Baruch professors and faculties showed its true face. Years of refusal to learn and use new technologies like computes and online applications Baby boomer’s generation professors and faculty forced Baruch college to cancel classes for several weeks and try to figure out a plan and caused students to suffer and miss out on classes and materials. As of now we are two semesters into the online teaching, and it is projected that this distance teaching will continue for another semester or so and many professor will continue to struggle to work with computers and teaching online. My advice is that Baruch college take an immediate action to teach professors how to work with computers and how to run an online class via zoom and create a new syllabus that reflects the current situation for students since majority of professors continue to follow their traditional syllabus.

For many years’ students had requested to have online advisement, helpdesk and consul since Baruch has limited faculties and they simply cannot support the number of students at Baruch. Since the pandemic and social distancing Baruch college was forced to convert all services to online with appointments only, saving students time and travel cost to college as well and wait time. This is a great example of what could have happened many years ago had Baruch board and faculties did not resists change!

I believe Covid-19 forced the baby boomer generation professor and staff at Baruch to accept change and be flexible. We have made a great progress towards implementing new technologies into our daily college life and my advice is that Baruch college should work on improving the current online system and continue using it after the pandemic is over.

  1. I believe that requesting professors to adapt technology and become comfortable with it to teach students is an incredibly impactful idea. Currently, I see many of my classes which are being held over Zoom suffer from this notion. Professors miss raised hands at times, don't know how to mute students who forgot their mics are on, or simply just have trouble understanding how to best utilize the software for their students. Fixing this issue would provide a great benefit to all parties.

Blog about Twitter

In my opinion Twitter users can discuss any subject freely and do not have to provide a right answer but rather their own opinion. In comparison, Blackboard discussions are heavily regulated by the professor and people must follow professor’s direction regarding their discussion and provide resources.  Because of the characters limit on Twitter, most conversation and comments are short and is not based on a scientific source. On Twitter discussions can be formal or casual and it can reach to all the followers and be retweeted to other users and create a very large audience. Both Black-board discussions and Twitter discussions are in form of short, formal written statements, however, in class discussions can be very interactive with professors and other students since the mean of the conversation is voice and face to face interactions allow students to see each other facial and physical impressions during...

Blog VS Wiki

Blogs are typically someone’s opinion which is followed by others comments below the post and blog posts has the tendency to be focused on the top news, personal experiences, and life stories of the blogger. Usually author of the blog is the only person who can audit the blog and post new content at a set time. Blog always shows the original publish date on the post and it does not show the dates that the post has been updated. Since only the author of the blog can post or audit information, blogs tends to be biased base on the authors believes and not exactly based on fact and academic sources.      Wiki articles represent consensus and could have an accompanying discussion page. In Wiki multiple authors can contribute and create a new post, audit the pervious posts, or even delete them. In Wiki the content is constantly changing, and viewer can the all the revision histories done by other authors. Wiki tends to be more scientific base and au...

Blog: Next New

Technology is changing at a rapid pace. Just ten years ago it was unimaginable to see how much cellphones would change and how depended the world would become to the internet. I believe the next new media will be Artificial Intelligence integrated into every aspect of our daily lives. Our cellphones, computers, and even TVs and even smart homes are already programmed with AI. Nowadays new electric cars have internet connection and options like auto pilot which is AI base. We are becoming more and more connected to virtual world and giving AI systems more accesses over our lives. Voice assistance programs like SIRI and Alexa are another example of AI technology surrounding our daily lives. Voice assistance programs started with cellphones, however, today homes and cars can be controlled with voice assistance programs.
